The Irene Storytelling Project

The Irene Storytelling Project of the Vermont Folklife Center works with communities hard-hit by Tropical Storm Irene to facilitate participatory community storytelling events, to support community-initiated documentation projects that explore the impact of Irene, and to maintain Irene Digital Memory, an online repository for media generated about Irene and the human response to the storm.

Currently the Vermont Folklife Center is working with residents of Mendon, Stockbridge and Rochester Vermont. In partnership with Starting Over Strong Vermont we are working with residents of Athens, Brattleboro, Ludlow, Plymouth, Waterbury and Wilmington Vermont. If you are a resident of a community affected by Irene and are interested in organizing a Story Circle or developing a community documentation project in your town or region, please contact Aylie Baker via email (abaker at or telephone, (802) 388-4964.

Support for the Irene Storytelling Project has been provided by Green Mountain Coffee, The Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation, Lyman Orton & Janice Izzi, Robert Fleming and Jane Howe Patrick Foundation, Vermont Community Foundation, Vermont Humanities Council, and anonymous donors.
